Frequently Asked Questions

1. What kinds of issues do chiropractic treatments help?

Open/Close

Chiropractic adjustments are best known for helping spinal, muscular and nervous system and joint issues. But they do more than that. Studies have found chiropractic care to be beneficial for flexibility, a decrease in stress, pain and tenderness, over-use injuries, improvements in breathing, headache relief, decreasing back pain and joint pain, improving digestive problems and menstrual cramps, as well as helping to alleviate infantile colic and making pregnancy easier and more comfortable.

2. If I don’t feel any pain, why would I see a chiropractor?

Open/Close

If I asked you why you exercise, do yoga, eat well or take supplements even if you don’t feel sick, what would you say? You might tell me that even though you might not feel bad, doing these things helps your body work even better, and helps you feel your best.

If I asked you why you visited your dentist if you didn’t have a toothache, what would you say? Most likely, you would tell me you go to the dentist to check up on your dental hygiene and to prevent problems from developing.

Pain is a poor indicator of health since it’s inaccurate, subjective, and in many cases problems can exist and progress for a long time before they become painful.

The same principle applies to seeing a chiropractor – a spinal checkup helps determine the health of your spine and nervous system, to catch problems early before they progress, and to help your body adapt and heal better than before. The preventative and wellness aspects of seeing a chiropractor are very powerful. If you want your body to feel and work at it’s best, you need to take preventative steps and that’s what we do.

3. If I start to see a chiropractor, how often would I need to go for appointments?

Open/Close

That depends on a number of factors, since not everybody needs the same amount of care at the same time. For instance, how long you have had the issue, how complex or advanced it is, what you want to achieve from your care, and how active a participant you are willing to be.

Just like taking a pill one time won’t lower your cholesterol right away, going to the gym once won’t build a beautiful body, or eating well once in a while won’t help you achieve your ideal weight -one visit won’t necessarily make your underlying problems disappear. What we do is help people feel better as quickly as possible, stop or slow down any change or damage to the spine and nervous system and ultimately, correct and rehabilitate the problem area(s). If we do this in tandem with the patient following home recommendations and taking care of themselves, then we can have the most significant affect.

After your initial visit, you and I will sit down and I will give you a report detailing how I can help you, what is wrong with you, how long it will take, and how much it will cost. If I can help you, I’ll let you know- and if you need to be referred to another office, I’ll be honest and tell you that too.

4. Do chiropractors crack bones?

Open/Close

Absolutely not. The clicking and popping sound you may hear during an adjustment is actually the sound of nitrogen gas escaping from the joint. To draw a comparison, it’s similar to the sound you hear when you open a jar of jam and there is a pop.

5. What does an adjustment feel like?

Open/Close

I have found both as a patient and from my patients that it feels like a tension or stress release, often throughout the whole body. Some people feel instant relief or say they can breathe better or deeper. Some people laugh or feel a sigh of relief. Whatever feeling they experiences is related to the sensation of having a ‘fixated’ joint unlocked or properly aligned.

6. How long will it take before I feel improvements?

Open/Close

Every case is different. Some people instantly feel relief, while others may initially feel stiff or sore before they feel better. One thing to keep in mind is that adjustments are not a cure-all. How well people feel from care relates to how well they live the ‘Eat strong, Breathe strong & Move strong’ philosophy.

7. How safe is chiropractic treatment?

Open/Close

Chiropractic treatment is very safe. With every patient, we do safety screening to ensure the benefit of care outweighs any potential side effects. In fact, the risk of a serious side effect is estimated as low as one in a million to one in five million. Researchers at the University of Toronto have also found that patients are no more likely to suffer a stroke after a visit to their chiropractor than they are following a visit to a family doctor.

8. Do I need a physician’s referral to see a chiropractor?

Open/Close

No. Chiropractors are primary health care providers in Ontario, and require no referral. For custom orthotics, some insurance carriers may require a physician’s prescription. Check your benefits to help avoid any delays.

9. Why do some doctors say you shouldn’t see a chiropractor?

Open/Close

In my experience as a chiropractor, I have found that many doctors support chiropractic care, refer patients to chiropractors and in fact, see chiropractors’ themselves. However, because alternative and complementary forms of medicine are not generally taught in medical schools, doctors do not learn or receive chiropractic training as part of their education, so some are not familiar with the benefits of it. That is changing today, as there is a growing trend of wellness-minded doctors open to many forms of alternative and complementary therapies, like the ones we provide.
